Tom Hoitsma - Bringing the Energy

12/12/2020

Dynamic movement.

These are the words we use in order to describe the artwork of Tom Hoitsma.

With fluid strokes and scrapes accompanied by layers of boldly colored paint, Hoitsma’s work stands tall and proud. His paintings almost seem to have a breath and pulse of their own.

Born and raised in New Jersey and just 15 miles from New York City, Hoitsma quickly realized his love for creating and pursued a Fine Arts Degree at Skidmore College. While studying there, he had the opportunity to be mentored by world-renowned art historian and author Harry Gaugh PhD who was pivotal in Hoitsma’s  journey to discover his unique expressive abstract style.

With influences from places such as New Jersey, New York, and Dallas Texas, Hoitsma cultivated his bold painting technique by using massive movement and expressive color. He paints with a purpose, which is to evoke a certain feeling linked to the location the painting was created. He brings the viewer into his own self at that time of making the work and transfixes his audience off of his technique, alone.

Hoitsma's work screams expression, while incorporating elegance and balance. His intense color palette and beautifully curated composition is what makes his work so enthralling. He sees the attraction, as well of importance, of statement artwork that is simply enjoyable to be in the presence of.

“I have been most influenced by the work of the Abstract Expressionist painters of the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s, specifically the “monumental” large scale painting of this genre. In all of my work a sense of the physical is very important. Brush in paint, paint on canvas or wood. The size of the work, the heavily layered paint and the almost sculptural quality of the 4” deep canvases, creates a dynamic visual experience. The goal is to change the air in the room. Exploring how specific combinations of marks and colors affect me in deeply profound ways is the focus of my work today. I refer to my current large scale paintings as “deconstructed landscapes” and while the starting point is generally inspired by landscape and/or the natural world, the goal is to get to the “feeling” of a specific visual experience.”
