Patrick McGannon

Patrick has lived and worked in Atlanta since 1997 after re-locating here from his home-town of Chicago. He attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago from 1985-1989. From 1989-1991 he attended Indiana University MFA program which included two trips to Florence, Italy and received his MFA in 1991. Since then Patrick has developed his work and has exhibited in numerous exhibitions across the US.

An important part of the creative process for Patrick is to take figures that are realistically conveyed through observation and fuse them or connect them visually, poetically and psychologically with a place and time to create an image that signifies something beyond the sum of its parts. These paintings are made by combining the intimate studio experience of working from life with images and places he has seen and knows. Although he is attempting to create a cohesive reality, some of the separation between the figure and the place remains and becomes part of the content of the painting revealing a new, and for the artist, signifying event. As humans we have a strong compulsion to create and seek signs in the world around us that tell us about ourselves, the world and where and what we are to do in the future. The spaces these figures occupy lend themselves to interpretation and perhaps meaning for the figures within and for the viewer.
