Kathleen Holmes, now a Florida resident, was born in Monroe, Louisiana in 1953, and grew up in the deep South. She incorporates found and self-made pieces of crocheted textiles into her work, as metaphors for the particular patterns of her native Southern culture.

For as long as anyone can remember, the women in my family have been masters at crocheting beautiful, intricate textiles from fine threads, Holmes says. I was taught the craft as a child and, like the women before me, made the usual utilitarian textiles. It wasn’t until I started incorporating them into my own work that I began to appreciate their true historic and artistic merit, not to mention their powerful abstract qualities.

"Working with the formalism of abstract pattern, I express my feelings about the nature of the many patterns we live by: emotional, social, behavioral, and spiritual. I incorporate found and self-made pieces of crocheted textiles into my work as metaphors for the particular patterns of my native Southern culture. Rusted, pierced, and shaped metal refers to man-made aspects of society and provides the visual and conceptual counterpoint to the woman-made textiles, thereby creating a metaphorical duality. "

Kathleen Holmes has exhibited her artwork in group and solo shows nationwide and has won numerous awards. Kathleen's work is collected by both the private and corporate sector.
