Gartner Blade

Gartner/Blade Glass is the work of Danielle Blade and Stephen Gartner. Danielle Blade was born in 1967, on the Isle of Wight, England. Daughter of British glass artist Martin Evans, Danielle moved to the United States in 1985. Stephen Gartner was born in 1964, in Phoenix, AZ. Stephen grew up in the southern United States and Europe.

Business partners since 1995, Danielle and Stephen combine their individual ideas, techniques and experiences to create original works in in hand blown and sculpted glass. Over the past decade they have been developing a series of pieces that explores their interpretation of objects of ritual and worship.

The inspiration for these pieces is rooted in nature and begins with their mutual fascination with the use of found objects in the rituals of primitive cultures. In these pieces they hope to convey a reverence for and an understanding of the value of our natural resources.

Natural elements such as bone, antlers, wood, vines, fossils and rock formations have inspired their signature designs which include covered vessels and sculptural objects. Gartner/Blade's work combines traditional hand blown techniques with innovative
color application and original sculpting techniques.

Prior to opening their own studio both Stephen and Danielle studied with prominent American and European glass artists. Both worked as glasshouse gaffers and glassblowing instructors.

The Amulet series ( large scale wall mounted works) and the Arbor series, either singularly or in groupings, are captivating , inspiring and totally original works.

"The Amulets take on the signifigance of fine jewelry; adorning our sacred spaces, attracting us and comforting us; perhaps giving us a tangible connection with forces larger than ourselves." Danielle Blade.

The surface of these pieces is highly tactile, and invites touch. The viewer is invited to look closely and from all angles at the unusual play of light on these sculptures.
Through sand etching and polishing these pieces gain the ability to both transmit light in areas and retain a beautiful opacity in others. These pieces can be viewed at fine galleries across the United States, Canada and Europe.
