Dorrie Koller

ARTIST STATEMENT

Dorrie D. Koller has been intrigued by the painted surface for as long as she can remember - the swirls of paint, dabs of colors mixing and blending with other colors; paints that are scraped back, revealing what they once covered. The properties of paint, in reality, are the concepts of relationships. Colors enhance or detract from each other. The shapes of these colors take form and further describe their meanings.

"It is my bond with nature that revitalizes me. I love a long soak in seawater, the scent of an oncoming rain, flowers bobbing with fat bumble bees. Butterflies and birds, whales and horses, pets and people - we all form a circle of life; and it is this "life force" that I focus on - life that gives me great joy.

There is a certain "gaiety" that starts to present itself midway through my work that then feeds the rest of the piece. This gaiety originates in thoughts that have connected us with nature over the centuries. Am I truly the superior being to the apple tree who feeds me? Is "Pinky", my cat, really a queen? Am I a flower child? It is this connectedness to nature, and how it has formed us socially and conversationally through the centuries, that inspires my deeply layered paintings.

Nature is a plethora of extravagant design, color, and rhythm that envelops us with happiness. My painting style of exaggerated, unrecognizable, life forms is significant in that there are still so many unidentified species on our planet. I let the paint speak for itself in order to better express the exuberance of nature and my delight in being a part of it."
