Cynthia Markert

Cynthia A. Markert has recently been discovered by the art world even though she has been perfecting her medium for over 20 years. She has attracted the attention of national and international collectors. Markert resides in Knoxville, Tennessee, which has fondly claimed her as "our artist."

Her Subject
Cynthia Markert has consciously chosen to retain women as her subject. Her glossy paintings of ethereal women seem to belong to another age. During her 20 years of painting, she has had "an ever evolving fascination with the decades from 1870 to the close of the Second World War, especially with regard to issues of gender and the idea of feminine identity."

Who are these women? "It is bits and pieces from my life, my twenties, my thirties, my discovery of the ‘New Woman’ of the 1890s, of the flapper, of the androgyny. It is Louise Brooks and Djuna Barnes and Zelda Fitzgerald: a little bit of Sylvia Plath, Anne Sexton and Emily Dickinson. It is my sister, my mother’s death, and my feelings about intimacy and spirituality. It is a crying out of the Yin spirit dominated by the Yang-spirited world."

Her Medium - Mixed Media on Wood
Her unique talent for mixing acrylic paint, oil sticks, ink, pastels, pencils and various mixtures of varnish on wood panels result in fragile yet strong images of women who know who they are, retaining their own identity and femininity. Each piece tells its "own story."

Ms. Markert is a charter member of the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C.
