Barbara Balzer

A national award-winning artist who has exhibited work at the Boca Raton Museum of Art, the Brevard Art Museum and the Florida State University Fine Art Gallery and Museum. Her work is included in many collections, including the permanent collection at Vero Beach Center for the Arts and she is represented by fine art galleries throught the southeast, including Lyon & Lyon Fine Arts in New Orleans, Newbill Collection by the Sea in Seaside, Florida, and Studio E Gallery at Palm Beach Gardens. She is the recipient of two State of Florida Artist Enhancement Grants.

While raising a family, Barbara did many other things: qualifying for the first Women's Olympic Marathon Trials in 1984, writing Florida's Lemon Law in 1988 while a Florida Senate staff attorney, and being a Homeroom mother for 8 years. All the while, however, she worked in clay, at night, on weekends, at the dining room table. While at the University of Iowa as a European Literature and Thought major, she had enrolled in a ceramics course and has been transfixed ever since by the materiality of clay and what it can do. Her work was soon included in exhibitions and won awards. After her son, Cullen, graduated from high school, Barbara was invited to apply to the MFA Program at the Florida State University College of Dance and Visual Arts, walking distance from her home. Accepted and awarded a scholarship, she continued investigating the human form in clay considering herself one in a long line of figurative sculptors, beginning with the humble potters who sculpted the Venus of Willerdorf Austria 30,000 years ago.
